For many people, writing jobs online mean making thousands of dollars each year in part-time or full-time income. For others, it means quitting their grueling day jobs and spending more time with family. To get paid for writing, you must have some habits already in place. It is easy to get a job; however, it is not as easy to get a well-paid job. It will take some time to build a portfolio and ultimately achieve the goals and dreams you have for writing. Patience, a knowledge on various types of content, and excellent grammar skills will get your career started. In order to stand above the rest, the following will certainly aid you on developing your writing career.

Passion

It may sound cliche, but in order to do the best job possible, you really need to have a passion for writing. Without passion, you could miss out or even pass up a less-than-perfect assignment that could have potentially landed you a permanent client, steady income, or a dream assignment. Writers write. Period.

Commitment

A buyer wants to know that upon hiring you, the assignment will be ready as promised. Even around the online world, people talk. Your repetition as a dependable and capable writer is on the line if your level of commitment should come in to question.

Quality

Grammatically correct and error-free writing that has been written specifically to the buyer's instructions should be submitted each and every time. A buyer hires you because he or she knows the level of work that you can and will produce. Do not give a buyer the opportunity to reject the submission.

Persistence

Even if you have finally landed that dream job or started having the success you aspired to, this is not the time to slow down or become lazy. Keep pushing forward. With every piece that you write, you are building a portfolio of works.

Give your self a raise

Once you have achieved a certain level of positive reputation as well as a portfolio of clients, be able to ask more for your work. You have proven your skills; it is time to get paid for them. Quality products deserve quality pay. Reaching a certain level of success can afford you the ability to expect more money than a mediocre writer just starting out in the field. A well-written and exquisite portfolio could even find you pursuing new and better opportunities.

Here are some tips that will help you safe-guard yourself and make the most of your precious time!

  • Find out if the ad still current. Many writing jobs online are posted and accepted very quickly, especially those for blogs. There are, however, also those employers to don't bother removing their ads.
  • Consider what kind of sample work the company requests. If you are asked for a sample of writing in the exact same genre and style as the work you will be submitting for payment, be very careful about complying unless you have prior knowledge that the advertiser is a legitimate company. Unfortunately, there are companies that will simply take your writing sample, use it, and never make contact with you again. And there will be not much you can do about it.
  • Do some research of your own. Make sure that the "professional editor" or "publishing house" has the credentials and contact information that shows it is really legit. If the employer is anonymous, if the email address comes from a free provider (for example, a gmail account), or if YOU are asked for payment in any way, BEWARE! Not all are frauds, but if your client is legit, they will not mind "proving it" to you.
  • Learn about how the job boards work. You will find that several online writing job boards seem to list only half of the necessary information, and then require you to pay to join their community to get the rest. Sometimes it's worth it, but many times that same ad can be found elsewhere, and in its entirety. Again, do your homework.
  • Don't fall for the "write now for future revenue" scheme. Don't waste your time with requests for free or very low paying writing gigs that promise "future revenue". If you DO write for free, only do so if it is for a website that will give you HUGE exposure.

If you have a full-time job, you're not out in the cold. You can still write articles in your free time. Many people make a couple hundred dollars each month while still working full-time. You can write at night, early in the morning, on break or on the weekends. This helps pay for grocery bills, insurance, college funds and even vacation money.
